Phishing
Phishing is a form of Internet fraud where people want to steal information such as credit cards, social security numbers, user IDs and passwords for bank accounts, in order to take swag and be evil.
They set up a fake website which looks identical to the real company like eBay or PayPal, then they try to trick people into logging into the site with their details and passwords.
There are 10 ways to prevent Phishing:
1. Identify Suspected Phishing Emails
This can be identified in different ways:
They copy the Logo of a real company.
They copy the name of a company.
Leads to a similar website.
They use negative or positive motivation in order to get people to click the link.
2. Check where the Mail is coming from.
Most businesses will not ask you to confirm information through E-mails, furthermore by checking who sent the E-mail can often tell you whether it is a fake address or not.
3. Never click on Links in Emails
Do not click on hyperlinks or links attached in the email, these will go straight to the fake website. Instead go onto the trusted website yourself and enquire about the information from the E-Mail.
4. Improve the Security of Your Computer
Keeping your computer protected with a good antivirus to block this type of attack is important.
5. Enter details in Secure Websites Only
Safe sites must begin with ‘https://’ and your browser should show an icon of a closed lock to prove this.
6. Check Your Accounts regularly
Checking your bank accounts periodically helps you to be aware of any irregularities in your online transactions.
7. Phishing can happen in any company
More commonly phishing attacks are against banks, but can also use any popular website to take information such as eBay, Facebook, PayPal, etc.
8. Phishing Knows All.
Phishing knows no boundaries, they can reach you in any language. They will come and they will find you.
9. If you doubt it, Do Not Risk It. If you don't doubt it, then still Do Not Risk It.
The best way to prevent phishing is to delete your email account, draw all your money from the bank, move to the country and hide it all in your mattress. This is the safest place for your money.
